Petrified Snapshot

When someone dies, their personal photographs typically end up in the garbage, junk stores or yard sales because there is no one to explain the pictures’ meaning. Used clothing does not beg for explanation. Its importance is determined by its commercial value only.

Images from the series "Petrified Snapshots" are meant to obscure the harmony between personal and collective memory. I use the snapshot to represent a personal memory. However, by printing them in negative, I remove specific and personal identification usually associated with the photographic image. This modification transforms them into a “generic snapshot”.

Actual clothing, is made rigid, painted the color of ash and mounted directly onto photograph. Just like a photograph captures a moment in time, I shaped the clothing to suggest a stopped gesture or moment. I want the combination of generic snapshot and frozen clothing to stimulate a collective memory of death.
